Public Hearings for Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 (Perkins IV)

Issue Context

Career and Technical Education in the State of New Mexico is a catalyst for innovation.  Virtually every high school student in New Mexico takes at least one career and technical education (CTE) course, and nearly one in four students take three or more CTE courses in a single program area.  Additionally, nearly one-third of college students are involved in CTE programs, and many adults engage in short-term post-secondary occupational training for ‘re-tooling’ or re-entry into the workforce.

Career Technical Education in New Mexico is designed to support lifelong learning opportunities for students to gain technical skills and knowledge that will help them become leaders in a global economy.  A source of supplemental funding for CTE activities in New Mexico is derived from the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins IV) grant.  Receipt of these supplemental funds depends on the approval of a six-year plan designed to advance CTE programs in New Mexico that are aligned to academic, economic, and workforce needs of the State.

The Hearings

Citizens are invited to participate in a regional public hearing to provide input and comment on the draft of New Mexico’s Perkins IV State Plan.  The hearing will assist the State in developing its plan to support CTE within the State.

What Will Happen After Forums?

Your suggestions can make a difference.  They will be used by the New Mexico Public Education Department to finalize the six-year plan that will be submitted to the Secretary of the US Department of Education.  Successful approval of the plan determines the financial support CTE receives from the US Department of Education.
